Context
The 4th ECOWAS Mining and Petroleum Forum (ECOMOF 2024) is taking place in Cotonou, Benin, from 22 to 24 February 2024. The aim of this regional forum is to promote the mining and oil sectors as a means of fostering the economic and social development of ECOWAS member countries.
Benin was chosen because of its significant mining and oil resources. The country has put in place policies to improve competitiveness and diversify investment, while respecting environmental standards and promoting community development.
The theme of the 4th edition is "Geo-extractive resources and technologies: pooling strategies to create added value in West Africa".. This underlines the importance of turning the mining and oil sectors into economic pillars, by developing attractive policies for investors and increasing the contribution of these sectors to government revenue.

THE CHALLENGES OF ECOMOF 2024
ECOMOF 2024 will address a series of critical challenges facing the mining and petroleum sectors in West Africa. These challenges include the need to reconcile economic development with environmental preservation, to strengthen safety and standards in extractive operations, to attract sustainable investment while addressing social and community concerns, and to find innovative solutions to maximise the economic benefits of these industries while minimising negative impacts. These challenges underline the importance of ECOMOF 2024 as a platform for dialogue and collaboration to identify practical and sustainable solutions to the complex natural resource challenges facing the region.
